| The only remaining Oxford Street pub boasts a superb brick and stone front elevation above the ground floor dating to the 1892 rebuild. Inside the well-preserved Victorian interior enjoys a wealth of carved wood, tiles, mirrors and murals as well as a lantern to the rear with post-WW2 glass. The welcome was warm but the pub was almost empty (mid-afternoon on a Thursday). Five ales on - London Pride for me at this stop, delicious and well kept without being too cold. | My girlfriend and I usually stop in here when we are shopping int he area. if we can get a seat. It's pretty small upstairs but always has a few guest ales on and you'll get served pretty quickly. Seating is cramped so it's not the place to go with a crowd for a session, but for two or three it's fantastic to sit yourself down in after beating the streets of the west end before getting the tube home. johnny_hay - 6 Mar 2011 00:30 |
| One of the best pubs in the West End, maybe London. Locals use the downstairs bar - that's the best place to drink. The toilets used to flood periodically, but they seem to have fixed that problwem now. Good hot nuts at the bar. stevefromharlow - 3 Mar 2011 17:08 |
| Like most people have said - its actually better than you might imagine and surprisinly quiet for a Sunday lunchtime. The "Astoria" bar sign brought a tear to my eye remembering all the great shows Id seen at the venue across the road now demolished. To be honest if you're in the area Id rather walk down to The Champion (turn right off Oxford St just before HMV) to a far superior pub. adamwalsh - 15 Nov 2010 09:47 |
